OUR STORY
Welcome to The Porterhouse Temple Bar, a family-run pub where tradition meets innovation in the heart of Dublin. Established in 1996 by Oliver Hughes and Liam LaHart, two of the great pioneers of craft brewing in Ireland.
It began with a simple mission: to bring back the rich culture of Irish brewing. Nearly thirty years ago, Oliver and Liam decided to challenge the status quo of the Irish beer market, which at the time, was dominated by mass-produced lagers and one particular stout. Oh, and pretty much one ale as well.
Inspired by their passion for quality and craft ales, they opened Ireland’s first brew pub on Parliament Street, Temple Bar
BEER, BEER
AND MORE BEER
Beginning with a small team, they brewed 9 beers on-site that were available on tap in the bar, having made their brewing journey from the top of the building to the kegs in the basement just 10 feet below! The original copper brew kettle sits proudly on the second floor as a reminder of a radical brewing era.
Oliver & Liam's passion was beer. Not only did they brew beer themselves, but they also were avidly enthusiastic about sourcing unique beers from around the world. They came up with a plan to ensure that The Porterhouse
had the largest selection of beer available in Ireland.
Word quickly spread that if you brought in a bottle of beer that they didn't stock, you would get 2 pints in return! To this day, some of these wonderful bottles brought in by customers almost 30 years ago, line the shelves on the walls in the bar. Oliver decided to name their first two beers Weiserbuddy (a light American style lager) and Probably (a pilsner lager).
The lawyers won't allow us to tell you what we were making fun of, but you can probably have a guess!! Since 1996 The Porterhouse Temple Bar still has many of the original range of beers in the bar today.
A WEALTH OF IRISH BREWING
Plain Porter has won the gold medal for 'Best Stout in The World' at The Brewing Industry Awards, not once, but twice! Also included in the original beer range are Oyster Stout, Nitro Red and Temple Lager which have stood the test of time. Not ones for resting on their laurels, The Porterhouse Brew Co. added beers along the way as tastes changed and developed. Beers like, Yippy IPA and Renegade NEIPA have become part of The Porterhouse beer range. Innovation and collaboration have also been a key part of expanding the range of beers. And if that wasn't enough Seasonal Beers and Guest Beers are a regular part of The Porterhouse Temple Bar.
